- Commencements from Colombia increased by 516.1% or 16,454 additional students, and commencements from Brazil increased by 146.8% or 5,153 additional students.
Commencements from China increased by 69.4% or 3,191 additional students versus YTD in July 2022. Chinese students made up 10.1% of commencements within ELICOS. - Thailand continues to hold the #3 market position with 73.8% growth or 3,482 additional commencements.
- YTD July commencements increased by 66.4% across all sectors. Enrolments increased by 37.6%.
- The VET sector experienced an increase in commencements at 38.2% or 36,095 additional students when compared to YTD July 2022.
- The Non-award sector experienced an increase in commencements at 99.4% or 10,701 additional students versus YTD July 2022.
Visa trends:
ELICOS only grants down by 12.73%
The Independent ELICOS sector grants were down in July 2023 by 12.73%, compared with July 2022, with 704 fewer grants, due to significant increases in grant approvals last year.
Offshore grants for Independent ELICOS were down by 17.52% in July 2023, with 953 fewer grants, compared to July 2022. Onshore grants for Independent ELICOS were over 276% higher, with 249 more grants.
ELICOS only visas granted to citizens from China were over 126% higher in July 2023 compared to July 2022. ELICOS visa grants for citizens from Mongolia were down by 67.4% and were down by 40% for citizens from Colombia, while grants to citizens from Brazil were up by over 37.74% for the same comparison period. ELICOS only visas granted to citizens from Chile were up by 25% in July 2023 compared to July 2022.

The total number of Independent ELICOS visa applications lodged for July 2023 was down by 6.28% compared to July 2022, with 4,659 total lodgements.
