ELICOS commencements fall 64.3% for April 2021 YTD
The ELICOS sector continues to battle crippling falls in numbers with 21,892 fewer commencements by YTD April 2021 compared to YTD April 2020. This decrease is on top of the heavy declines that the sector experienced in 2020 as Australia closed its borders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
April 2020 marked the first full month of border closures in Australia, leading to a 17.8% decrease in ELICOS commencements when comparing YTD April 2020 to YTD April 2019. Comparing YTD April 2021 with YTD April 2019 reveals an astounding decrease of more than 30,000 commencements or a 71.5% decline.
April onshore independent ELICOS visa lodgements drop 52%
Onshore lodgements for independent ELICOS visas were somewhat of a positive story in the first quarter of 2021, but April has ended this good news story. These lodgements were trending upwards with 225 placed in January, 253 in February and 286 in March. However, April only saw 136 onshore independent ELICOS visa lodgements, a 52% decline on March’s numbers.
Independent ELICOS visa grant figures fall 86.7%
The Independent ELICOS sector visa grant figures for YTD April of 2021 show an overall fall of 8,103 fewer visas granted than in YTD April of 2020. This was comprised of a severe drop in offshore grants of 6,913 or 97.2% and a smaller fall in onshore grants of 1,190 or 53.2%.
