ELICOS commencements fall 68.6% for February 2021 YTD
February is the first data set that the Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) has released for 2021. The data shows the largest decrease in commencements that the sector has seen since the beginning of the Covid pandemic.
Besides Nepal (down 52.1%), every top-10 source country is now down over 60% with Colombia, Brazil, Japan and Thailand all down more than 70%. Australia now has more students studying from Chile than India – traditionally Australia’s second biggest source market for international students and ELICOS’ sixth largest.
ELICOS-only visa grants down 89.6% for February 2021 YTD
The pipeline for ELICOS students has now almost completely dried up with ELICOS-only visa grants down almost 90%. This comprises of a severe drop in offshore grants of 5,215 or 97.6% and a smaller fall in onshore grants of 606 or 52.6%.
