July YTD commencements decrease nearly 30 per cent
In a continuing blow to the sector, July YTD 2020 commencement data recorded a 29.4% decrease on July YTD 2019. This decrease has sharpened since June 2020’s YTD numbers, which saw the YTD figure sit at 24%.
The extent to which this trend continues remains to be seen but with offshore Grants opening again to allow offshore, online study, perhaps we can be more hopeful. July saw 136 visas granted for the Independent ELICOS sector, a marked improvement on April, May and June where they basically ceased altogether.
July records largest drop in student numbers for 2020
July 2020 saw 3,733 commencements in the ELICOS sector compared with 10,138 in July 2019. This is a fall of 63.2%, marking the decrease as the biggest in 2020 thus far.
Change in visa reporting cycle
We have changed the reporting cycle of the ‘Student Visa Lodgements and Grants’ section of our Monthly Market Report from the financial year to the calendar year. This change aligns this section of the report with our ‘Enrolments and Commencements’ section, based on DESE’s data.
