ELICOS Market Analysis: April 2020

Covid-19 leads to a 17.8% decrease in ELICOS commencements
The impact of Covid-19 is now fully visible with the first significant decrease in commencements occurring in April. Commencements from China fell by more than 40% in April, which has almost brought China down from the number one source country for Australia. It is now only roughly 300 students ahead of Colombia.

Colombia records 17.3% growth despite Covid-19
Perhaps most astoundingly, Colombia’s commencements still grew in April. This may give some interesting insight into the amount of time that students are in the country before they commence their course, adding more value to the Australian economy beyond their enrolment period alone.

Nepal increases slightly at 2.5%
Nepal, together with a handful of countries, also grew during April. Turkey, Pakistan, Mexico and Hong Kong were some of these countries, but only Nepal is a top 10 source country. Interestingly, Oman almost doubled its student cohort, rising from 94 to 171 students.
