It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of January 2023. I hope all our members and industry partners had a wonderful festive period and a happy start to the New Year.

As 2022 draws to a close, I am pleased by and proud of how the ELICOS sector has emerged, after facing yet more challenges in the wake of the pandemic. While several challenges remain, the strength of current enrolments, particularly in private colleges, and recent visa lodgement data fills me with optimism for the future.

Quality and Quantity – Scaling Employability Support

ETS TOEFL and Successful Graduate have joined forces to combat some of these issues. Leveraging the Successful Graduate platform, ETS TOEFL have introduced relevant online modules, from comprehensive pre-departure modules for AAERI network education agency counsellors to improve upon their knowledge base, increase their confidence and provide their agencies a springboard for professional development and staff retention. As well, student-oriented modules from Finding Part-Time Work, to Professional Networking are being progressively introduced

There’s never a dull moment at English Australia, and this month we’ve held our AGM, welcomed our new 2022-23 English Australia Board, had some significant announcements from our regulators related to the return to compliance, launched our new CPD Portal, and flew the flag at the AIEC.

September has been busier than ever for English Australia, with our 2022 virtual annual conference taking place, our PIEoneer Association of the Year win, and new English Australia Board members to welcome. Sadly, we lost one of our treasured leaders with the passing of Christine Bundesen AM.

English Australia is excited to officially announce that we were proudly recognised as the winner of the Association of the Year at the 2022 PIEoneer Awards at the award ceremony held in London on Friday 9 September 2022.

August has been a busy month for English Australia, with a significant focus on teacher recruitment as part of our advocacy efforts, the launch of two new English language teaching courses in online and hybrid delivery. We released our latest research report outlining the partnership opportunities between Australia and Vietnam in English language teaching, and have been finalising preparations for our upcoming annual conference, which is less than two weeks away. Teacher shortage places the recovery of a decimated sector at risk

Australia’s English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) sector is finally rebuilding following the drastic impact of COVID-19 border closures, however, colleges are facing further challenges as teachers who were forced to leave the sector because of the significant reduction in student numbers are proving difficult to lure back, placing the recovery of the sector at risk.

July has been a busy month for English Australia in our efforts to support members. I would like to thank all the members that participated in the Annual ELICOS Market Survey again this year with the report released this week. Visa processing and teacher shortages have been key focuses of our advocacy this month, and the Ed-tech symposium was a highlight of our Professional Development activities with more details provided below.
