YTD June ELICOS commencements decrease 24%
Commencement numbers continue to dwindle for the ELICOS sector, now hovering between 2013 and 2014’s levels at 43,292. However, June’s decrease was not as significant as May’s. May 2020 saw 4,408 ELICOS students begin compared to 7,715 in May 2019. June 2020 saw 5,118 start compared to 6,734 in June 2019. May 2020’s y-o-y decrease was bigger both in real numbers (3,307 fewer commencements versus 1,616) and percentages (43% decrease compared to June’s 24%)

ELICOS-only visa grants down 16.8% for the 19/20 FY
ELICOS-only visa grants fared slightly better than total visa grants, which fell by 61,005 grants or -17.4% compared to the previous financial year. This is a substantially larger fall than experienced by the sector in FY2009-10 where the fall was about 40,000 grants or 14.7%.

The decline in ELICOS-only visa grants consisted of a fall in offshore grants of 6,594 or 22.7% and an increase in onshore grants (up by 332 or 4%). The offshore grants made up 75% of total grants and 90% of these were for applicants who had not previously held a visa for Australia. Of the onshore grants, 51% were previously students (14% of the total), 35% had been on a visitor visa, and 13% had been on a working holiday visa.
