In December last year, we announced our Quarterly ELICOS Market Insight survey. This program was to involve a paid quarterly report that would cover student numbers across all visa types, among other key data points.
In fantastic news for our industry, English Australia is now bringing this initiative to the entire sector completely for free.
What is the Quarterly ELICOS Market Insight Survey?
The Quarterly ELICOS Market Insight survey involves a survey and report that covers areas such as:
- overall number of students and student weeks
- student numbers and student weeks by source market
- student numbers and student weeks by source market and visa type
- student numbers and student weeks by source market and booking source (direct/commissionable)
- student numbers and student weeks by source market and booking type (individual/group)
- proportion of students studying 100% online.
The report involves a similar process to English Australia’s Annual ELICOS Market Survey
How does my college participate?
Our research partners, Bonard, will soon invite all Australian ELICOS colleges to participate in the Quarterly ELICOS Market Insight survey.

How does the Quarterly ELICOS Market Insight Survey work?
At the end of each quarter, colleges will need to submit their student data through one of three options:
- populating a pre-defined MS Excel template
- sharing an export from your student management system
- completing an online survey to capture the data.
Colleges will need to commit to providing their data for each quarter for the whole year. Each quarter’s data is submitted in the following month, for instance: data for April – June will be submitted in July.
The report will be available roughly 6 weeks after each quarter.
When do I need to submit my first data set?
We expect to invite colleges to participate in the Quarterly ELICOS Market Insight survey in the week beginning 8 June 2020. From this date, colleges will have roughly two weeks to submit their data for the January – March quarter (Q1).
To properly benchmark the first report, colleges will need to submit their first data set for both 2019 and 2020. This is particularly important given the impact of COVID-19 on our industry.
Data for the second quarter (April – June) will need to shortly follow with submissions open from 1 July 2020. As with Q1, colleges will need to submit both their 2019 and 2020 data.

What do I receive in the Quarterly ELICOS Market Insight program?
As well as each quarter’s report, the Quarterly ELICOS Market Insight survey is supplemented by an accompanying MS Excel dataset with aggregated data.
