As October draws to a close, I’m buoyed with a sense of cautious optimism. The prerequisite steps that we need to see before international students return to our shores are falling into place with major announcements happening this month on student arrivals and reopening plans.

At the halfway point of 2021, the current lockdowns and restrictions feel as though we’ve travelled back 12 months. The present challenges and those faced over the past year continue to add pressure on us all individually and collectively.

State and territory governments are making further headway in their plans to return international students to our shores as the importance of international education becomes increasingly apparent to the business community.

As well as today’s announced support package, I also look at other key activities that English Australia has been undertaking throughout April such as our Future of ELICOS consultations and a new report that we are developing on the economic impact of Covid-19 on the sector and the Australian economy.

JobKeeper’s end will present considerable challenges for our sector, but English Australia will continue to fight for a support package that protects members and ensures the ELICOS sector thrives.

As we move into March, I am acutely aware of our members’ need for ongoing financial support. As outlined in the advocacy section of this newsletter, English Australia will continue to do its utmost to secure the support that we all need.
